The vibe
The Massif de la Sainte-Baume stretches along the border between the Var and the Bouches-du-Rhône. Listed as a regional nature park, it offers family-friendly trails suited to most levels, in a wooded setting quite different from the coast. The village of Plan-d'Aups-Sainte-Baume (686 m), with its Hostellerie de la Sainte-Baume, is the classic starting point towards the Grotte de Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, a pilgrimage site tucked into the cliff. The massif is also crossed by two long-distance hiking routes, the GR9 and the GR98.
What to know before you go
The Sainte-Baume regional nature park strongly recommends keeping your dog on a leash in the massif, because of the presence of livestock guardian dogs and bees — a strong recommendation rather than a formal order. As with the other massifs in the Bouches-du-Rhône, traffic and access to the massif are regulated from 1 June to 30 September by prefectural order (and sometimes municipal order), following a colour code ranging from green to red, to check day by day on the PNR Sainte-Baume website before setting off.
Nearby
The village of Plan-d'Aups-Sainte-Baume, at the foot of the massif, is handy for a break before getting back on the road.
