The vibe

Between Gourdon, Le Bar-sur-Loup and Tourettes-sur-Loup, these gorges are known for their waterfalls and fast-flowing water, in a spectacular setting in the Nice backcountry, well away from the coast's beach atmosphere. The Cascade de Courmes, a petrifying waterfall around 20 metres high, has been a listed historic site since 1913.

What to know before you go

A major safety point, missing from our previous listing: swimming is officially and explicitly BANNED at the Cascade de Courmes, under a municipal order of 8 April 2003 that bans all sporting activity and swimming across the whole site (official source: DREAL regulatory record). At the Saut du Loup too, entering the water is reported as strictly banned by a municipal sign. Access to the banks is largely private — only the path itself is public. Dogs must be kept on a leash, as the site is part of the Préalpes d'Azur Regional Nature Park. No parking is possible right at the Cascade de Courmes (roadside only); a car park exists at the Saut du Loup, along the gorge road at Gourdon.

Coco's tip: the perched village of Gourdon, clinging to the cliff, offers a dizzying view over the gorges — a great stop to admire the site, but plan for a walk, not a swim, which is strictly banned here.

Nearby

The Saut du Loup, an iconic waterfall in the area, is a classic stop for visitors to the region (swimming also banned, see above).
