The vibe

The most iconic lake in the Verdon, formed in 1974 by an EDF dam, with spectacular turquoise waters where the gorges open out. It's one of the most beautiful bodies of water in France, and dogs on a leash are welcome on the beaches.

What to know before you go

Several beaches line the lake (Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon, Bauduen, Les Salles-sur-Verdon), each with a different feel depending on the village. Several campsites in the area, such as Les Rives du Lac de Sainte-Croix, also accept dogs if you want to extend your stay on site.

Coco's tip: the Pont du Galetas, at the entrance to the gorges, offers a spectacular view — and a good starting point for a canoe trip with your dog.

Nearby

The Verdon gorges themselves are worth the detour, but river swimming there is riskier (cold water, currents) — it's better to save swimming for the lake itself.
