The vibe

Menton is an exception on the French Riviera: the town sets aside an actual stretch of beach for dogs, just past the Garavan harbour, a stone's throw from the Italian border. A small pebble beach with views over the hills, where dogs can swim freely on a leash.

What to know before you go

Official detail confirmed on menton.fr (the "Le bord de mer" and "Chiens sur les plages de Menton" pages): in high season, dog access is limited to between 7pm and 9am; out of season, access is free all day. The town hall notes a fine of around €68 for a dog not kept on a leash. The more central plage du Casino also accepts dogs and offers supervised swimming with easier access for people with reduced mobility — these are the only two beaches officially named by the town hall (Garavan and Casino); a third name sometimes mentioned by third-party sites ("plage du Gorbio") could not be confirmed on the official page. It's a good fallback if the Garavan cani-plage is too crowded in high season.

Coco's tip: the Garavan area is also very close to Italy — a good way to turn your walk into a two-country outing on the same day.

Nearby

The Pointe des Douaniers beach in Cap-d'Ail is a few kilometres west, another dog-friendly option in this otherwise very restrictive stretch of the Alpes-Maritimes.
