The vibe

Less than 15 km from Nice, Mont Chauve d'Aspremont rises to around 850 metres and offers an open view over the Baie des Anges, the Var valley and the surrounding hills. The summit bears the remains of a 19th-century fort and a forest of telecommunications masts, a striking contrast with the scrubland landscape crossed on the way up.

What to know before you go

The tour of Mont Chauve, starting from the village of Aspremont, covers about 7.5 km with roughly 345 metres of elevation gain over a 3-hour duration, rated easy. The trail follows the GR5/GR51 markers for a good part of the route, before reaching the area around the fort. Dogs are commonly seen in this area and several hikers confirm they're welcome, but none of the sources consulted clearly specifies whether a leash is mandatory or not on this communal trail: as a precaution, keep your dog on a leash, especially near the fort and if mountain bikers or riders are around.

Coco's tip: the summit is very windy, even in fine weather — bring a light layer for yourself and something to shelter your dog from the wind during the picnic stop.

Nearby

The village of Aspremont, with its stepped lanes typical of the hilltop villages inland from Nice, is easy to visit before or after the hike.
