The vibe

The department's main river, the Argens winds between Le Muy and Roquebrune-sur-Argens before reaching the sea at Fréjus. Several calm spots allow for a quiet swim with your dog, away from the bustle of the beaches in summer.

What to know before you go

Water level and flow vary a lot with the season — after a dry summer, some swimming spots can be very low. A point of caution noted by whitewater sports specialist sites: fallen trees across the riverbed are reported in places, a real danger in case of a flood (floating debris, rapidly rising current) — stay alert to the day's conditions. Occasional organic pollution is also mentioned in summer on the downstream section, after Montfort (a specialist source, not official bathing-water quality data for this specific stretch). The Camping La Plage d'Argens, at the river mouth, also rents paddleboards and kayaks to explore the river with your dog; another river swimming spot exists a bit further on, "Le Gour" at Vidauban.

Coco's tip: the calmest banks are upstream, around Le Muy, away from the bustle at the river mouth in summer.

Nearby

The Roquebrune rock, a red sandstone massif, overlooks the valley and offers lovely views to extend the outing on foot.
