The vibe

In the heart of Sainte-Maxime, one specific stretch of the town-centre beach, right by the Pont du Préconil (where the Préconil stream meets the sea), is the only part where dogs are welcome — the town's genuine "dog beach".

What to know before you go

We previously flagged a contradiction here between sources on whether La Madrague was dog-friendly year-round. It's now resolved: according to Sainte-Maxime tourist office's official FAQ (sainte-maxime.com), only two coastal areas in the whole town are allowed for dogs year-round: this dog beach by the Pont du Préconil, and the land portion of Pointe des Sardinaux (closed in July and August). On every other beach in town — the rest of the town-centre beach, Les Oursins, La Nartelle, La Garonnette, La Madrague, Les Éléphants, La Croisette, and the southern tip of Pointe des Sardinaux — dogs are forbidden year-round. Dogs must be kept on a leash and their waste picked up; only guide and assistance dogs are allowed on every beach without exception.

Coco's tip: a widely-shared "Dog friendly" guide for the Golfe de Saint-Tropez claims a seasonal tolerance exists from October to May on La Croisette, Les Éléphants and La Madrague — but Sainte-Maxime's own official FAQ and beach pages, updated in 2026, state the ban applies year-round with no such exception. If in doubt, check the signage on site before settling there with your dog outside the two dedicated zones.

Nearby

Sainte-Maxime's harbour and town centre are a few minutes' walk away, with plenty of seafront café terraces where your dog can join you. The town was awarded the Région Sud "Pet-friendly town" label in May 2023, and has a fenced dog park, the Jardin des chiens des Virgiles (chemin des Virgiles), open 24/7, limited to 10 dogs at a time.
