The vibe
The Reppe and Destel gorges meet north of Ollioules, carved by water into beautiful white limestone. The listed site even served as a hideout for the 18th-century bandit Gaspard de Besse — a dramatic setting just fifteen minutes from Toulon.
What to know before you go
An important caveat to the "summer cool-down" image: several independent, consistent sources report that the Destel canyon is often dry in summer, and only has water in late winter and early spring. The natural pools, when they hold water, let you cool off with your dog after the walk — but don't count on it in high summer. The hike is also described as sporty, with equipped scramble sections, not recommended for young children: best suited to a dog comfortable on rough terrain. The site stays fairly busy in summer despite the lack of water, so it's better to go early in the morning. The massif closes to vehicles from 15 June to 15 September (possibly extended to 30 September), and can close to walkers in case of severe to extreme fire risk.
Nearby
The village of Ollioules, with its Provençal market, is a good stop before or after the outing.
