The vibe
The Baou de Saint-Jeannet is one of the most recognisable summits inland from Nice: a rocky plateau rising to 802 metres that towers over the village of the same name. The climb alternates between a scrubland path, stretches between pines and a few rocky sections, before opening onto a vast summit plateau with an orientation table and a 360° panorama over the French Riviera, from Cap d'Antibes to the first foothills of the Préalpes.
What to know before you go
The marked trail is manageable for most regular hikers, with around 600 metres of elevation gain on the full loop from Saint-Jeannet; some sources rate it as moderate, others as more demanding depending on the variant taken, with a somewhat trickier passage just before the summit. Dogs are allowed on the trail but must be kept on a leash, notably because of busy stretches and the presence of livestock in places. The site is very busy at weekends: it's best to set off early, especially in summer when the heat can be intense on the exposed, shadeless sections.
Nearby
The hilltop village of Saint-Jeannet, at the foot of the Baou, is worth a detour with its typical lanes and views over the Var valley. La Gaude, a neighbouring village, offers other hiking routes on its own Baou.
