An essential point upfront

Since the 2021 Gonfaron fire, which destroyed about two-thirds of the Plaine des Maures national nature reserve, a prefectural order (10 September 2021, amended 27 July 2022) strictly bans access to the entire reserve: on foot, by bike, on horseback, and the presence of dogs is banned even on a leash. This general ban remains in force to date according to the official sources consulted (Var prefecture, SNPN). It is therefore no longer a freely accessible reserve.

The exception: the Sentier de la Résilience

One exception exists: the "Sentier de la Résilience", opened in April 2025, a 3.5 km educational trail marked with 10 information panels, starting at the first Lac des Escarcets car park (Le Cannet-des-Maures). On this specific trail, the reserve's usual rules apply: dogs allowed, must be kept on a leash, provided you stay strictly on the marked trail, with no collecting of species or minerals. The ground here is scrubland, sandy and rocky in places, with cork oaks and umbrella pines offering shade in sections. Lac des Escarcets itself (11 ha, reed beds, Natura 2000 nesting site) is not suitable for dog swimming — it's a sensitive area to be protected.

Coco's tip: don't venture off the marked Sentier de la Résilience, even if the rest of the reserve may seem accessible — the ban is real and enforced, on top of protecting an ecosystem still recovering from the fire.

Nearby

Le Cannet-des-Maures and the villages of the Massif des Maures are nearby, to extend the day after this short, guided walk. In this same central Var area, Lac de Carcès and the Argens River offer other waterways less than 30 minutes away, and the Club Canin Dracénois in Draguignan can round out the outing with guided activities.
